VERDICT / This Mac video capture software is excellent for capturing and editing video.

Screenium Mac video capture software is a simple application to use. It has the features and tools to capture and edit content for your personal or professional projects. Due to its recording abilities and editing tools, Screenium earns our Top Ten Reviews Bronze Award. While it lacks a few features that keep it from being the best Mac video capture software, Screenium has much to offer.

Recording Features

This Mac video capture software offers all the recording tools we look for, except screenshot capture and scheduled recording. However, it has a timer that lets you set a delay to record. You also can set a maximum recording time to limit the length of a recording. In addition, you can record from your Mac's iSight camera or an external camera connected through USB.

You can use Screenium to record video game footage, which gives it an advantage over some Mac video capture software programs on our lineup. While this isn't a necessary feature, video game screencasts and commentaries, part of eSports, are becoming ever more popular.

This software records in stealth mode, with the icon removed from your Mac's dock. You can hide the desktop background and icons when you record video on Macs too.

Editing Tools

You can cut clips, add transitions, edit audio and make other changes to your recordings. This video capture software for Mac earns high marks for ease of use, which takes into account the software's approachability and the usefulness of the design interface, tools and features.

Screenium offers a host of strong editing tools. You can add arrows, solid circles and solid polygons, as well as a square frame and circle frame to place around portions of your video. You can do voiceovers, add text and change the fonts and text sizes as well. This software lets you add shadows and frames and adjust the size and thickness. You can zoom and mute parts of your screencasts if you want to.

There are 31 image filters, including Chroma Key, Gamma Adjust, Zoom Blur, Sharpen Luminance, Sepia Tone and others. There are also 14 audio filters, including Parametric EQ, Peak Limiter, Dynamics Processor, Distortion, Reverb, Delay and others.

Screenium does not have a tool to place a watermark on your screencasts, which can be problematic if you're concerned with branding your work properly.

Conversion Formats

Although Screenium offers nine video formats, including animation, and seven audio formats, it does not let you convert files to WAV, AIFF, HTML or PNG. For many people, this won't be much of an issue, but we like to see more support for various conversion formats. After all, the more options you have, the more versatile your videos can be.

Help & Support

Help and support options available with this Mac video capture software include tutorials and a knowledgebase. You may contact support via email if you need technical help, but there is no telephone support. This generally means a longer wait time. We are disappointed to note that there isn't a user forum or a blog. These support options are excellent for self-diagnosing issues and learning about the software.

Screenium offers solid options for recording video and audio files and editing them into video presentations or other media projects. It lacks a few standard conversion formats and support options, but overall, this Mac video capture software is a quality product for any personal or professional video-capture project.
