PROS / Debut Video Capture Software can record video from your computer and audio from a microphone in real time.

CONS / This product does not record system audio or upload screencasts directly to YouTube.

VERDICT / This Mac video capture software has some great video recording tools but falls short in editing tools.

Debut offers tools and features to let you capture online and external video for almost any purpose. It's Mac video capture software with ample recording tools but few editing tools, driving it to the middle of the pack on our lineup.

This product offers full screen and real-time recording. You can record video from an iSight camera or any external camera attached through USB. You also can capture video game footage – something that is becoming more and more popular on Macs. This Mac video recording software does not let you record desktop activities, such as cursor movement, opening and closing applications, and so forth.

This software has two capture options. You can drag your mouse to capture part of a screen, or an entire screen. The application lets you schedule a time to begin automatic recordings as well.

Debut lets you shrink or enlarge your videos and change the frame rate from one frame per second up to 60 fps. You can enable time lapse to capture frames at varied intervals, whether seconds, minutes or hours.

You can record audio from an external microphone with this video recording software for Mac, but not from your computer's internal soundcard.

Editing tools are limited in Debut. You can resize screencasts, add text and place a watermark. You cannot splice video or edit audio, and there is no option to upload directly to YouTube.

Debut supports only four of the seven standard formats we evaluated for our lineup. You cannot save recordings in AIFF, WAV or HTML. However, the software supports eight conversion formats to record video on your Mac. These include MP4, AVI, MOV, MPG, FLV, SWF, DV and 3GP. You can take screenshots as JPG and PNG files.

The online FAQs for this product are well organized and packed with information. There are helpful user forums and tutorials online, as well as email support. This product lacks telephone support and a blog.

Debut has some great video recording tools but falls short in editing tools. While it may not be the best video capture software for Mac, this product will adequately handle video recording. You may want to find another application with more editing tools if you want to fine-tune your videos before sharing them.
